Artist Statement
I believe in expression. My interest in this approach to art developed when I was trying to find deeper meaning out of my practice, from descriptive to conceptual. The understanding of human nature, states of mind and beauty of emotion or aesthetic phenomena are focuses in my drawings or painting work. The goal is to always be honing the outcome, finding a way to craft an image that works on many levels and allows much interpretation while maintaining simplicity. Art is a struggle, it is confronting power and interpreting it. My work thus is about the external, because power while capable of coming from inside usually is much more potent through the group. My art is about the singular but also the broader society, how large social conditions manifest individually. When I paint, I sometimes try to understand sensations of synesthia by translating song into image through musical recordings. In future works I hope to address the human condition through figurative and portrait work in pastel, oil and charcoal.
